Drawings, History & Structure
The restoration of a classic sailing yachtWe were able to obtain copies of Maybird’s original design drawings from the ships plans department of the National Maritime Museum (www.nmm.ac.uk) at Greenwich. Fortunately, they had some 12 original drawings – mostly on linen as was the practice in 1937. The ships plans department provided us with good quality photocopies which became our working drawings throughout the project.
Georgina Crauford
From our research, we made contact with Georgina Crauford and Christopher Corbet, the daughter and son of John Russell – Maybird’s owner from 1949 to 1971. Georgina and Christopher sailed on her as children and teenagers and, as Georgina still lives in Lymington, she made many visits during the early stages of the project to advise on how Maybird was configured in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Theo Rye
It was around this period that Theo Rye, (TheoRye2@aol.com 01962 793125) a naval architect and expert on classic wooden yachts advised us on various structural aspects of the project.
